"CREAM OF THE CROP" COFFEE AND DESSERT TASTING - FOUR SEASONS RESORT
On Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10am to 2pm, the Kona Coffee Council will be holding its Sixth Annual Cream of the Crop coffee and dessert tasting competition at the Hualalai Four Seasons Resort in the Haku Amphitheater. Admission is free. Twenty-one select Kona coffee growers will each have booths in the amphitheater providing sample cups of their brewed coffee along with education about coffee growing and processing in the Kona region of the Big Island of Hawaii. The competition is divided into three categories of coffee growing: Organic, Estate and Open, which allows all growers an opportunity to participate in the event. To complement the delicious coffee there will be live Hawaiian music, & chefs from local restaurants and resorts, as well as amateurs, will be offering desserts made with Kona coffee as one of the ingredients. Visitors to the event will be encouraged to vote for their favorite coffee in the three categories. Local chefs will be voting for their favorite coffees as well, so visitors can see how their votes compare to those of professionals. Finally, the desserts will be judged by a panel, and the results of the voting will be announced before the end of the day. Interspersed with the coffee and dessert booths will be a number of local artists who will be demonstrating, and have for sale, coffee related arts. ESTABLISHMENT DAY HAWAIIAN FESTIVAL - KAWAIHAE
The public is invited to join to participate in the cultural demonstrations and workshop activities in Pelekane (royal courtyard) located near the beach below Pu'ukohola Heiau with only one stipulation: that each visitor learns at least one craft before leaving the area to help preserve a part of the Hawaiian culture. Parking will be on the coral flats south of Kawaihae Harbor. More than 20 hands-on arts and craft workshops and demonstrations will be available, including lei haku, ame lei wili (ancient lei making), hana hu (making spinning tops), hana kapa kuiki (quilting), Hawaiian games, kahili (feather standards), ulanalauhala (lauhala weaving), holo wa'a (canoe rides) and more. FOREST EDUCATION FAIR - NIAULANI CAMPUS, VOLCANO VILLAGE
Learn about Volcano area forests and Hawaiian cultural connections in this one-day open house. The fair features a native plant sale, hula and music performances, and educational displays about rare and endangered flora and fauna as well as about invasive plant and animal species. Hands-on demonstrations show the connection between the forest, Hawaiian arts and crafts, and traditional and contemporary usages of Hawai'i's plants. Cultural practitioners and educators present a variety of hands-on activities, from lei making and kapa beating to printing with plants and learning songs about the forest. WAIMEA CENTER UPCOUNTRY CHRISTMAS FAIR & TOWN PARADE
The Upcountry Christmas Fair features free live music, keiki "make and take" crafts, sidewalk sales, over 50 artists and crafters, and of course, Santa! Beautiful wreaths entered into the "Big Island Bounty Wreath Contest" will also be on display. KAILUA-KONA COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS PARADE
Kailua-Kona's Christmas Parade will begin at 5 p.m., starting at the Kekuaokalani Gym (near the Old Airport), going along Kuakini Highway, down Palani, and along Alii Drive ending at Coconut Grove Marketplace, with close to 60 entries. Announcing stations will be at West Hawaii Today (Kuakini & Kaiwi St.), King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, Life Church (upstairs from Shave Scandinavian Shave Ice), Pancho & Lefty's, Kimo's at Uncle Billy's Hotel, Waterfront Row, Lava Java, and up on the lanai at Coconut Grove Marketplace. Santa will be at West Hawaii Today from 4:30 until 5pm, and after the parade at Coconut Grove Marketplace.
